External antenna , My Asus Eee pc 900ha

here is the Eee 900HA with 3dbi antenna .

and here is the Eee with the 9dbi antenna , kinda crazy looking for being in public with ,but what the hell ,ya already look crazy .

OK , to start this post I should say that I bought the pigtail and and antennas from a place called Netgate.com As I found them recommended by Seattlewireless.net.price wise ,this is what my order ended up looking like .

Products
------------------------------------------------------
1 x 3 dBi Rubber Duck Omni RP-SMA (ANT-3OMNI-RPSMA) = $8.00
1 x U.FL to RP-SMA Jack Bulkhead Pigtail 6", 1.78mm cable, 6 GHz (PIG-UFL-RPSMA-BH-6) = $14.00
1 x 9 dBi Rubber Duck Omni RP-SMA (ANT-9OMNI-RPSMA) = $17.95

Shipping times were really great btw. I would order from them again . it was shipped from Austin ,Tx to Seattle in right at 4 days.Good work Netgate!

The 900HA wireless sucks . I dont know how true the meter readings are in the crunchbang linux im using now ,but normally I have only gotten 40-44% sitting a room away (maybe 20 feet from the router ) , and with the 3dbi antenna I get 65-68% and a huge increase in speed that is every noticeable . The 9 dbi antenna is giving me 78-80% increase and even more speed .It seems to vary from night to day during this hot summer alot due to thermal fade . I would say those are great results .

Kismet-newcore has really turned into a passive packet sniffing beast ,I really like the results as now the "packet/signal graph" shows amazing blobs of colors that really get me excited to see when running it with the 9dbi antenna even more so then with the 3dbi (as expected) Now, its a must that I patch the cards wifi drivers for injection .Wouldn't you say ? More on that here !

I used I-hacked guide here on doing this modification .find it here . This is for the the Asus EEE 4G Surf ,yet it is related somewhat to the 900ha . The mic is mounted on the screen in the Asus 900HA Eee that is different .

Here is specific information on taking the 900ha apart ,might be a good idea to read through this also .

One , pointer I would give is that you really watch were you route that freakin ext. antenna pigtail as if you decide to route it under the MB under the area were the power switch is then you might notice that your Eee likes to turn on when you are touching your Eee the wrong way or turn off while typing. yeah , that has to do with the fact that you pigtail is not going to go under that area yet it needs to go over
This is how your pigtail should be routed .

I think next i should do an intel 5300 802.11 a/b/g/n ,being the it uses MIMO technology , one antenna for Rx and one for Tx to increase throughput. Then I should add a second external antenna to that card. I just need to do a little research on the subject first . I will most definitely have to post the results for you here if it does happen .

Either way , I intend to now iron out the kinks in using bluetooth so as to pair my BT gps receiver with my laptop and do a little warbiking using kismet .I'm curious as to what I may find out

Checkout seattlewireless.net , as they have tons of great information about wireless antennas , wireless links , and most of all, Support seattlewireless.org .

Crunchbang linux (#!) , lite version ,on the Eee 900HA.Much lighter then ol' ubuntu

So ,after setting up a bootable .iso of Ubuntu with NetUbootin on a USB flash drive to try on my Eee and testing it , It left much to be desired. Ubuntu was using 25% cpu all the time no matter that I had no other programs running . I had to seek a better solution because as we all know ,CPU equals battery and this is a freaking mobile device ,we need our batteries !

At first I sat out to roll my own Linux distro for the Eee based on Ubuntu running a lightweight Windows Manager like fluxbox and some curses programs like rtorrent ,since I really like how fast and minimal they are on any system . What better system them the Eee to use them ?

Well, tossing stuff into the google machine turned up some promising time saving results! Crunchbang (#! )linux is a distro based on the Ubuntu minimal cd built up using openbox as the window manager . The lite version had a small amount of curses programs that I already use so I went with it being I like the minimal approach that I could build upon.Since Ubuntu 9.04 (and Crunchbang 9.04 , being that they are the same at the base ) now supports the Eee there is no need to use the Adam kernel (the Eee spec kernel) with the Eee like with ver 8.10 .it looks like this will save me alot headache all around .

It was a simple install from the bootable USB drive that I made using UNetBootin . I simply made the usb following the directions freely available all over the net for making the USB drive and then installed Crunchbang (#!) using the install feature in Crunchbang itself .

Notice the keyboard shortcuts used for launching all your commonly used programs in this next screenshot displayed in conky system monitor that installs on the desktop .This comes in real handy while using my Eee as I really hate using that little touchpad /trackpad /whatever thingy (lets hope that My touchscreen kit shows up from Hong Kong soon ) . Oh, yeah , and check out our RAM and CPU usage now . Thats much better . Your mileage may very , I have removed CUPS ( used for printing ) and such because they started at start up and were a total waste for me since I will never use this netbook to print ,but This is pretty much what I have seen on the desktop since first install minus a couple of precent CPU and a small difference in RAM here and there ,plus the new wallpaper and conky ,more on that later .

(I should add the network usage is showing the files that I just downloaded and uploaded before taking this screenshot , that indication isnt normal )

In this next shot you can see that My swap is listed , I take it that this is a bug as I don't actually have any swap space what so ever .This doesn't bother Me and I havent looked into it much , I do remember removing the swap from the conky scripts fit on my little Eee screen .

2GB OCZ RAM upgrade for the Asus Eee pc 900ha !!

Wow, so , rumor is that because of Windows ,Asus and other companies have to limit netbook RAM to 1 GB to get Windows XP for the price that they do .Asus is paying something like 30 bucks per copy of XP which as you all no is no longer available . I think this is to keep this little computer from really hurting other computer market niches running Windows (most of all it seems ) and maybe even new releases of the operating system due those lil' netbooks low cost .

So, I guess hearing this sparked something in me and that was that Windows sucks to me even more and so does its stupid freaking RAM policy !! Screw you windows !!!

One of our first orders of business is to upgrade the RAM and either put XP in a little corner of the harddrive and only use it when I'm forced to ,or even better, boot it in a Virtual Machine and remove its partition on the harddrive leaving my main boot record much safer.Well , all thats left is removing it from the harddrive since Im booting it in all its suckyness in a Virtual Machine,.Anyway , on to business!!!!!1

Installing the RAM !!

Installing the RAM was really freaking easy . To start I should say that I ordered the RAM (OCZ 2048MB pc5400 667mhz SODIMM ) from Tigerdirect.com for the price of $22.99 on sell.Total price to ship was $27.73 . Thats cheap , dang . It came really fast too , within the week .Thanks TigerDirect.com ,oh yeah , and screw you Windows!!

Ok, we have our RAM and all we got ta do is open the cover on the bottom of our Eeepc . Its held in with 4 small screws .I'm pointing at two of the screws in the cover here, the other two are exactly opposite of these.

Removing screws......wow, fun . till you loose of those little #%$@er! Dont lose em!'

Ok, now if you have your Eeepc facing you the same way that I do here then .By the RAM cover farthest away from you you will see A little indention in the case prefect for prying your cover off the case . I had to work at prying the area gently all along that edge as the cover clips in using tabs along the perimeter of the cover .Keep in mind also that there are larger tabs on the cover closest to you that do not come out the same way, so you will have to lift the cover at the point you started prying up at in the first place toward you ,allowing the cover to move within the case yet at its very minimum within the area in the case closest to you till you get to a good point were it will be easy to remove.( got that !!! :) )

OK , now the cover is off . Now just move these tabs that I'm pointing to here outboard at the point closed to you facing just like you were before and the old RAM will pop right out . Install the new RAM by doing the exact opposite ,but this time your RAM should clip right into the grip of these tabs .

Now, go in reverse and put it back together ,

AHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHHA. Ah, ya , and SCREW YOU WINDOWS!!!

HA, sticking to the man .laters.

10400mAh battery for the Asus Eee 900ha pc from Ebay equals maybe not a total disappointment.

Ok , so here is the battery that I got from Ebay seller supermart168 .On first glance You can see that the battery keeps the screen from opening all the way and Its not the battery that was pictured and so I left a negative response after finding out that they have continued to do business like this after complaints and returns before with a couple of other members on eeeuser.com(beside it being false advertising and against Ebays rules!!) Instead of getting screwed with shipping the thing back and not having my feedback to leave to let others know of This injustice.I choose to keep it and leave a 100% negative feedback . Screw you supermart168.

On a more positive note . The battery gives me right around 5.5 hours of life while on my first test .With brightness set at 50% I downloaded a 700mb file via rtorrent, I watched one .avi movie stored on my harddrive,Installed wireshark, and surfed the web the whole time . When i wasn't watching the movie i was listening to mp3s podcasts from the LinuxOutlaws the whole time (yep ,I had to catch up on em' , I love em!). Also ,I was using irssi while chating in 6 or 7 channels . I say that the charge held up well though at 9:27 my os (crunchbang) was showing 7.2 percent charge yet it lasted till 11:36 after the fact.

I should also add that #! crunchbang now shows how much battery i actually have left after a full battery drain and reboot .Crunchbang says 5 hours and 30 mintues now that it actually had a chance to gauge the battery and learn it, of course I dont know how it works ,but it does now!!

I hear others have gotten the battery they actually have pictured for Eees like the 900a from unknown vendors and they say that they rather have one like this were the screen doesn't actually open all way like the one I have and has alot less for the backend of the netbook to be jackup on sitting all weirdish , I dunno . Here are some pictures .You be the judge .
